Short Story
by Revenge
Jeffery recently was married to Alexis. They've been dating for over 3 years and he knew she was the girl for him. They had been planning a cruise for their honeymoon and they were driving there as the sun came up. "I can't believe we got this deal, how could they afford to let one person on for free?", said Jeffery. "I don't know, haha, I'm not to terribly concerned!", hollered Alexis. "Did you bring the snorkels?" "I don't think we'll be swimming dear", said Jeffery smiling. The sun was mid-sky when their boat began its voyage. The couple had put their things in their large room and went up onto the starboard side. They had been cooped away in the belly of the ship for a few hours going over safety and the schedule of the crew. They walked along the right side of the boat. "Feel that breeze, it's amazing!", exclaimed Jeffery. "It's freezing up here! I don't know what you're talking about!", joked Alexis. The ship's horns screeched out into the open ocean. The sound traveled much farther than was expected, slowly dying down as the ship carried on. "Want to go feel the water? I heard they have an area around the ship that has a walkway close to the water.", stated Jeffery. "How would they even do that, and why? That sounds dangerous", paused Alexis, "I suppose we can try it." Port side, they walked down a narrow set of stairs, coming much closer to the water than they had expected. If they reached over they could touch the water. "Okay, here we go.", Jeffery said as he leaned over to attempt to touch the water. His fingers poked the surface, however he could not do it again. "Careful Jeff," said Alexis. She put one leg up on one of the bars and leaned over. Her hand went into the ocean, water rushing around her wrist, she giggled. "This is amazing, something so simple and silly." Jeffery took another step up, but the boat's horn blared above them and he missed his hand placement. As his body flipped over the railing, his feet had hit Alexis' arms and knocked her into the ocean. They both floated still as the boat pulled away. No one had noticed their disappearance due to it being supper and the crewmen were inside hauling coal to fuel the rotors. Jeff and Alexis floated there, not moving besides with the current of the vast ocean. Why hadn't they screamed? An hour had past and Jeffery spoke, "this is nice". Alexis, turned a sharp look onto Jeff and screamed, "what!?". "The ocean, I love it," Jeffery said calmly. "How are you not worried?!", spasmed Alexis. "It's the ocean, I've loved it since I was little. My dad used to take me out fishing with him every time I came home with good grades, I can't be sad when I am on the water", Jeffery paused, "that and there is another boat coming on this exact course any minute now". Splash, Alexis was gone. Jeffery looked where Alexis' body was seen last and blinked, trying to process what happened. A shark had pulled Alexis under the water without struggle. "Alexis!", Jeffery screamed with all his might as he pushed his head into the water; attempting to search for her. His attempt was futile, the water was too heavily concentrated with salt to see a foot in front of him. Alexis was gone and Jeffery was left without a paddle. Jeffery floated in silence for hours, his skin becoming tense from the constant rubbing salt. The suns beat was intense on the water, and Jeffery could not see much. So he decided to lay on his back, floating face up. He heard nothing. Jeffery sat there in his small boat, smiling up into the sky as a faint male voice soothed him into a deep sleep. |
