Plus no matter your hardware, Windows 8's reduced memory usage and better memory management does provide noticeable benefits for games like Skyrim

Windows 8 is fine if you don't have a great overall computer because it uses damn near no RAM or CPU to run however if you're running good gaming hardware there's no reason to not have Win

Yeah it has compatibility modes and whatnot. It's also genereally newer and faster than 7. And shinier, don't forget shinier.

@Hatty It has some minor issues with past gen/older games for the PC. Newer games like Battlefield 4 would be one of those that suites best for Windows 8 on the performance based.
