Advantages Windows 8 has over Windows 7:
- Aero's finally been slimmed down. It was a stupid memory hog before. Not so bad for PCs like mine but the change is great for laptops.
- A cleaner control panel, and better multi-monitor options.
- Administrative tools are available by default for admin users.
- Refresh feature. I haven't used it for ages because I haven't had viruses for a long time, but I have used it a couple times to get rid of bloat and it's great
- Much better memory management and reduced OS memory usage. For games like Skyrim, which reach the limits of 32-bit memory addressing, this is very helpful
- Fast Boot
- The new task manager is simply brilliant. Whenever I look at the 7 task manager now, I'm disgusted. The new task manager allows sorting applications by CPU, memory, net, and disk usage, and has a tab for start-up programs. The latter is a great feature, as it allows you to disable bloat applications that you require for that one thing, that insist on announcing their pitiful existence on every boot otherwise
- The Start Screen, though this highly debatable. I personally prefer it, alongside OblyTile, which is great btw, as, well... tiles just look beautiful if laid out well.
- Uh... Minesweeper. Have you seen the Windows 8 Minesweeper app? It's just so... shiny. And it has achievements and everything. Plus an actual tutorial. Oh and it even has an adventure mode, which is great for some cool mine dodging action.
- Touch support. I haven't tried this at all yet, so I don't know how well it works first-hand, but I've heard good things about it, and I want to get a touchscreen laptop next year(or whenever I can afford one), then I can try it out. (I can stream games to it using Steam In-Home Streaming, in case you were wondering
) - Personally, I much prefer Windows 8's clean window art to Windows 7's fake glass effect. I've never been a fan of fake shininess and pointless bevels, but I guess it's down to personal opinion

Which is better and why?
Windows 7 is better because Windows 8 was given birth to by Windows Vista. Windows 7 gives great performance in low-end, mid-range, and even high-end games. Also the UI layout for Windows 7 beats the living daylights out of Windows 8 any day.
What do you prefer?
I would prefer Windows 7 and would recommend for everyone to get and use. Unless if Microsoft decides to release another Windows soon and can prove that it can beat 7's performance by a huge margin and won't be as buggy as Vista or 8.
Which are you currently running?
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit all the way baby! Never gave any booting problems before, and even boots up faster within a minute and 30 seconds max on this work desktop PC of mine from 2009. The new PC from 2013 booted up to desktop within 30 seconds even though I didn't have a Solid State Drive installed to it and had over 30 games installed to the 2TB SATA III Hard Drive. Even though the Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit is a RAM hungry software, at least I can say is that I'm happy it can show some decent performance throughout the desktop and other software.

How was Windows 8 given birth to by Windows Vista? Explain yourself. I've never heard of such a fact, though I have heard that people think that Windows 8 is as bad as Vista, but that's purely because of the interface as far as I know, and not because they think it's buggy. |

How am I a troll if 8 other people voted on Windows 7 along with me? I don't find that trolling just because they prefer Windows 7 better over 8. I overall think that they made the right and perfect choice for choosing Windows 7 as their favorite and best Windows.

It's trolling because you're acting as if it's a fact that Windows 7 is better for gaming, despite the actual stats showing that Windows 8 either meets 7 or overtakes it in framerates or stability in most games.
(And you're generally acting as if your opinion is fact, and you're ignoring actual facts) |

Not by the looks of it. I'm just supporting what Windows suites the best for me in performance and gaming based, and Windows 7 is the one. Even the majority here had agreed with choosing Windows 7 over 8. You can't just go off-topic into thinking someone is "trolling" without knowing what's going on at first. So please stay on-topic in this debate thread instead of going around and accusing others of trolling just because the choice you picked wasn't chosen by the majority as their most favorite..

Being wrong isn't trolling.
I prefer Windows 8. Until Vulture provides some evidence for his claims that Windows 7 has better performance than Windows 8 then I wont' believe him. I was under the impression that Windows 8 was generally improved in performance.
The main problem people have with Windows 8 is the interface, the start screen and everything. People's kneejerk reaction when they get Windows 8 is to install some third-party program which reinstates the start menu because W8 has a new way of navigating that people don't like. Having got used to it, I prefer the start screen and the W8 style. The tiles and everything are a very nice way of laying out my programs and gives me a lot more options and space than the old start menu. The shortcuts and everything make it easier to use than W7. The Windows Explorer interface is much more convenient, in things like being able to tick items to select them individually. And Windows 8 probably was made more for tablets than PCs but they're going some way to fixing that in Update 1 in April which will make it much more PC-oriented.

But your opinion is more of a statement of fact, if anything. You can't simply believe that one car has more fuel than another. It is a fact that one has more fuel, and simply insisting beyond all of the actual evidence that one car has more fuel is not going to change anything.
(or, for a more appropriate analogy, you can't simply believe that an older car is faster than a newer car that's been designed specifically to be faster. If the new car has met it's goal, it is faster. That is fact. You can't simply deny it and insist that the older car is better for... uh... driving past the speed limit )
E: Heh, here are some gaming benchmarks, to prove Vulture's odd points about 7 being better for gaming wrong:
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/11/24/battlefield_4_windows_7_vs_81_performance_review/
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/windows-8-gaming-performance,review-32553-3.html
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/windows-8-gaming-performance,review-32553-4.html
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/windows-8-gaming-performance,review-32553-5.html
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/windows-8-gaming-performance,review-32553-5.html
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/windows-8-gaming-performance,review-32553-7.html
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/windows-8-gaming-performance,review-32553-8.html
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/windows-8-gaming-performance,review-32553-11.html
Performance is pretty much the same throughout, thus Windows 7 does not have any noticeable advantage when it comes to gaming.
Bearing in mind that the tomshardware benchmarks are fairly old and performance has only improved on Windows 8/8.1 since then, and the issues with Sleeping Dogs and other games have been dealt with.(Yes, I've played Sleeping Dogs on Windows 8. It works fine now)
And also, Windows 8's memory management is great, so pretty much all of the issues with memory corruption/background usage in Skyrim are void with Windows 8.(though that was only an issue for serious modders I suppose)
And Startup times:
http://www.techspot.com/review/561-windows8-vs-windows7/page2.html
Office/file copying:
http://www.techspot.com/review/561-windows8-vs-windows7/page3.html
Thus while Windows 8 isn't much faster than Windows 7 for anything but startup and multi-tasking, it is no slower, so your strange argument about 7 being better for gaming is just ridiculous and irritating.
Pretty much the only valid complaint about I've seen about Windows 8 is the interface, but that's down to personal taste. There are no stats that I've seen that show 7 being better for anything, except maybe looking shinier and stuff.

You realise that's how arguments work, Jaz? People make claims, such as 'Windows 7 is faster.' Other people may then want to dispute these claims.
You recovered yourself when you posted links against the claim, instead of just saying it's trolling.

I thought you use to run Vista Hat? Anyway, in some things Windows 8 is better and in some things Windows 7 is better (performance wise) and that is a fact. This was kind of just to see what OS is preferred within the general community. |
