Portable Hard Drive

So recently my 1Tb hard drive decided it didnt want to open on any computer. It shows up under the Disk Management thingy but it says its unknown nd uninitialized nd unallocated. it freaked out nd i hav not yet found a way to fix it, i have many important Pictures on it from forever, over 50gb of pictures, 100gb of Videos nd 34gb of music:/:/. the pictures are from as long ago as 2003 or so. they are Wedding Bithdays nd everything. if anyone knows a way to fix this or anything please tell me.

umm from what i know try mounting your hard drive at the back of your pc if that doesnt work try using a mac then go disk utility and repair the disk (wont erase any files). If you dont have access to a mac try get a windows version of that like a disk manager or something. if all those dont work you probably have to format it.

Well, I'm sorry to say this, but once a hard drive doesn't want to boot Windows or files up due to broken parts/fried because of heat/dead on start, then there is no way to recover the files that were saved in the hard drive. I heard this from someone who knows more about computers than I do. So if you were to get a new portable hard drive, I would suggest the ones that run stable and with a power cable that isn't plugged into the hard drive and power surge leaving it on 24/7. But then again, USB Flash Drive is always the king.

well i had it for over a year nd as half. nd it was Western Digital one so i think it was pretty good. i think it might be my sisters dropping it :/

It can also brick if you leave it out in the open with it getting dusty and dirty. It's always best to keep things with air holes in a closed type of place rather than wide opened type of areas.

you said it shows up under disk manger....do you know where device manager is and how to use it? if so check to make sure you dont need to update or rollback the drivers for it. its hard to guess what happened idk what you do on your pc from day to day

Take it to a local computer store - they're more likely to be able to recover your data if they can try a few things out with it. It's really hard to diagnose a problem like this online.
In the future, I'd recommend that you use cloud storage, meaning you'd have less risk of losing data.
