I was listening to the Great Debate by Dream Theater (http://www.youtub...z6vpiXQJNA) and I realised I had no idea where I stood on the subject of stem cell research.
Please, someone go ahead and make up my mind for me.

I'm not up to speed on current stem cell research. I know ppl talk about them blending up babies and injecting the mash into the brains of Alsheimer's patients, but I'm sure that's not what is actually going down.

As I understand it stem cells are cells that are not yet differentiated into different types - e.g. bone cells, liver cells, etc.. You can use these to repair broken organs, cure diseases and stuff. So it sounds like a good idea - the controversy arises from the fact that the primary source of stem cells is from embryos.

Embryonic stem cells are the most useful for research, as opposed to bone marrow stem cells. This is because embryonic stems cells can differentiate (change into) any cell in the human body. They're a bit like 'template' cells.
With bone marrow cells, of which there isn't really any debate over the usage, they can only differentiate into (red and white) blood cells. So, they're not so useful except for diseases of the blood and possibly immune system. They are what are sometimes referred to as 'adult' stem cells.
"Blending up babies" is an extreme exaggeration. As far as I'm aware, the stem cells are usually obtained, as a donation, from those discarded by IVF (in vitro fertilisation) treatments, since only a few need to be implanted into the patient. These cells would otherwise be thrown away and of course not develop into humans. It's important to note that these are just clumps of cells - not a little baby.
These stem cells can be made to differentiate into any cell of the human body by carefully controlling their environment.
The reason for this research is that their use could be extremely beneficial to the medical world in that it would enable us to engineer entire tissues for transplantation and to repair body tissues.
Stem cells could save lives. Of course it should be encouraged.

So long as they don't try to blend up babies, I'm cool with it.
