Get an Anti Virus program:
1) I would suggest getting an Anti Virus program such as Kaspersky or Malwarebytes. (Do not get Norton, Avast, or AVG as they're really awful and would detect anything as a virus..) Contact me for details.
2) Whenever you're browsing on the internet, do not click on random popups that tell you to download a missing plugin. What they would do is later tell you to download some registry fixer and then it will automatically download viruses into your computer instead.
3) In order to keep away from those nasty popups, I would suggest going to the addon search from your web browser and download AdBlock Plus. AdBlock Plus is a great program to keep away from annoying ads on various website along with getting rid of the ads from Youtube videos as well. (I use it as it has helped me a lot by keeping away from ads.)
4) If you think your computer was infected by a virus as it has been acting weird lately, then I suggest you doing a system restore from the system tools. Try to remember the previous date when the computer wasn't acting all weird/slow and go back to that certain date with system restore. What system restore would do is get rid of the viruses and installed programs from that certain date to the previous. But don't worry, it will still keep your saved documents such as pictures, videos, word documents, songs, etc.
5) Whenever you're browsing the internet, I would suggest keeping your Anti Virus such as Malwarebytes on and that can help block the suspicious websites.
6) If you want to play any games and think that your Anti Virus is lagging your computer, then you can disable the Anti Virus and play online games, but remember to turn your Anti Virus back on once you're ready to go web browsing again.
7) If you download a certain program from the website, you can either scan the file from your Anti Virus, or visit the following website: http://www.virust...
Virus Total is a great website to scan both files and any type of suspicious websites. In order to scan files from the Virus Total website, make sure you put the file into an archive (.rar or .zip) and then click on the Browse button to scan your file and wait till it finishes uploading the file. Once it's done uploading, it will scan the file with various Anti Virus scanners that are built into the website and will give you a detection ratio of the file. There should be a total of 46 Anti Virus scanners built into the website. So let's say if you scan a file that will show 0/46 in the detection ratio, then that means the file is clean as no viruses were found. But if the detection ratio hits somewhere as 28+/46, then it's most likely that the file is a virus. It will also provide the list of viruses that each Anti virus scanner has found on the bottom list. As for the website scan, all you have to do is click scan a URL and copy and paste the url there and scan it. It will do the same detection ratio type of scan like the file scanner.
If you have any questions regarding to this or getting rid of viruses from your computer, then please let me know by sending a PM to my inbox, Xfiring me, or posting a reply here. Thanks.

Not entirely relevant to antivirus, but I'd also add ccleaner, free program on cleaning your hard drive of unused stuff?
Also noscript is also an addon that is useful..
it blocks javascript, java, flashlight, etc.

I usually use Norton 360, it does it's job quite well and it doesn't give me any errors and my start up time hasn't gone to crap while using it. It's good as a firewall but I usually am more careful when downloading things. Norton 360 isn't terrible and it does it's job quite well from my experience. However, it's virus removal is subpar.
As for virus removal, I usually use JRT, AdW, and ComboFix for mostly anything. If I'm feeling ballsy I'll use Regedit (lol jk).

No, but I've had a free antivirus (AVG) for the longest time (Since 2009). Even downloading torrents, never had a problem.

Malware bytes anti Malware is a freeware and is very efficient. Remember! malwares and viruses are different programs. There is another anti-virus software from Microsoft and is free. I don't remember the name right now. it takes a long time to scan your PC but goes in depth and works well. If you remind me I can go back and look for it.

Okay. So. Everyone has their opinion on what to use. I do believe vulture has been admitted ZA TECH, am i right? So let him do his thing. There is no need to post comments about what is better and what not. This is for the people who can't fix their computer themselves so let it be that way.

Smurf, just because vulture was allowed to have "tech" behind his sitename doesn't mean he is the final authority on everything computers nor does it mean he is the best or knows the most in that same regard. He is giving an opinion just as others were. Other people can share their knowledge in regards to computer fixes too.

Yeah, the Microsoft one that comes with Windows is 'Microsoft Security Essentials'. I've used that before and never liked it due to how long it takes to scan files and then later saying only 1 or 2 detections being found. But when I used Malwarebytes to scan for the first time, there were at least like 30+ found.
Also one more thing as what Carnage had said about everyone having their own opinions about Anti Virus is true. But the ones I've used and loved would be:
Kaspersky
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
So if you guys have any other useful Anti Virus programs that you want to share about, then feel free to post them here.
