If you don't know much about it, have a read here: http://en.wikiped...ild_policy

What is your opinion on China's 'one-child policy'?

Would you support the introduction of the one-child policy in your country? Why?

Would you propose any sort of birth control policy for your country?
What would that policy be?

Would you like to have children? How many? Why?

My family is from China...so I've been to China before. The policy is good to keep their population stable. However, parents will put girls up for adoption and not boys. They keep boys because they want their family name to keep going. I say to let them have at most 2 children of any combination. Also, if they have twins, they are able to keep them because my mom's friend has twins (1 boy, 1 girl).

I think I'll state some facts...
In China, due to the one child policy, there have been a lot of abortions and infanticide due to families preferring boys to girls.
The policy also isn't the case for everyone. In rural places like Tibet, families can have more children. I think they can have more anyways to help with work.
In developing countries, families have many children because they need them to help with work and also because they didn't know if their kids were going to die. Many children died within the first few years of life, due to diseases. When a country goes through a industrial/medical revolution, the mortality rate drops, but out of habit families tend to have many kids anyway. Eventually families begin only having 1 or 2 kids, like here in the US.
Use these as you will.
Also keep in mind that the Earth as a whole is NOT overpopulated. There are enough resources to support everyone, they are just not evenly distributed.

Now my opinion:
I believe the one child policy in the USA would be unconstitutional, and I don't think we would need it anyway. Americans have lots of access to birth control, and we don't have as large a population as China does. And no, those families with lots of children (the Duggars) do not make an impact on our population because they aren't the norm.
I'm not sure whether it was the governments right to say that you can have only one child, but it was effective in lowering the population growth.

I am against the policy, because they don't have the right to have as many kids as they want.

Alright, my family is from China, I lived in China for the first few years of my life (although I am born in Pittsburgh), I still have tons of relatives who are back in China, and I go back to China once every few years, either to visit my family members there or tour around major attraction areas. Therefore, I have somewhat of an insight about the One Child Policy and the rationale behind it.

If you visit any of the Chinese cities (where the majority populace lives), the first thing you will know is that it is crowded as hell. The sidewalks are always crowded. The roads are always blocked by traffic (sometimes even for days). Constructions workers are constantly building colossal skyscrapers in breakneck speed in order to ease the burdening population. Everything when I visit China, I always miss the spaciousness of America. Just compare the population density between these two countries and you'll see what I am talking about.

The Chinese government (CCCP) knows this. They know that the country is facing a population crisis, and it needs to do something about it. That is why it is employing the One Child Policy(OCP). It is actually working, at least partially. Statistics have estimated have China will have almost 1.5 billion people without the OCP, compared to 1.34 billion in real life. Compare China with India as well. India's population growth rate is much higher than that of China since India does not have a OCP. In fact, India's population count will eclipse China's in just a few years, making India the most populous country in the world. Not to mention that India also have its shares of population issues as well.

Does the OCP has flaws? Definitely. Like Luna said, OCP is poorly regulated in the rural areas. I have cousins who live in the rural areas of central China, and some have multiple children. Yes, I have many nieces and nephews. Wealthier Chinese can also circumvent the OCP if they can pay a large fee to the officials, which is pretty much bribery. If a woman is caught pregnant with a second child, the officials may force her to have an abortion, sometimes brutally. That has been causing a lot controversy in the Chinese media recently. Like what Firefox said, the OCP has also caused a widening gender imbalance.

Do I support the OCP? Sort of, more for principle in China than practicality. I know the OCP will not occur in Western countries because 1) they don't have a population crisis compared to Asian countries and 2) they strongly value individual rights, freedom, and liberty (a sentiment that I share as well, like the ZAs who posted) here. However, even in modern times, the Chinese value familial/social harmony more than individual liberty so they are more willing to give up their right of having a second child in order to relive the unbearable (I know I experienced it) social pressures of having too manu people. However, I do have some issues about how the Chinese government goes around implementing/enforcing this OCP. For exmaple, instead of forced abortions, the officials can rather just impose fines.

You know what we needs to do? Populate the empty spaces in the world.

But... everything needs to be environment-friendly.

Empty spaces are usually unbearably harsh places to live, like Antarctica and Arkansas.

I don't see a problem with imposing a control scheme on people if without it, the whole population would be badly affected. In over-populated countries, it's important to try to set a limit. You don't have a right to do whatever the hell you want - not in a civilised society. Your actions have to be justifiable for the greater good of society. Just like how you don't have a right to go out in the street and murder hundreds of people since you have a duty to protect others' lives, citizens of a very densely populated area have a duty to help control the population size, thus don't have a right to have lots of offspring.

I don't know much about how well the policy actually works; I've never been to China. However, it seems clear to me that this is a necessary scheme to have been put in place there. It should also be strongly considered in countries with similar population issues such as India.

If the policy really doesn't work in practice, then I would suggest a different approach to the issue, along the lines of education. There would be a campaign advertising the problems associated with overpopulation and raising awareness of the need to control birth rates. Thus, citizens can make an informed decision about how many children they would like and need, taking into account whether their decision is sustainable.

^This pretty much.

I myself am a half and half. North Korean and Chinese (No I'm not a communist.) and I have been to China before. I can say right now that I would have to go with the whole one child policy even if it seems to be unfair. I doubt a huge population explosion considering China's already huge population would not be such an amazing thing for their health, economy, etc. The more people = more food needed = famine etc.

Of course, how China regulates the OCP and how they deal with people who do not follow the OCP is an entirely different story. Which is why I prefer living in America instead of China.
