Ok this is a pretty basic tut but again i've had a few people asking recently. So i thought i'd write a tut on how to INJECT a skin, this won't show you how to make them, just make one you have downloaded visible.
first off you are goin to need halo mapping tools or HMT for short (http://www.gamefr...1/HMT_v3_5) that can be found here.
Ok well first off open HMT.
Next open the map you want to skin. This can be done by clicking the black box in the bottom left hand corner saying "open map file"
Once the map is loaded ine the "rescource browser" box a whole list of tags should open up. You want to look for [bitm]bitmaps and expand it, it should be near the top so you shouldn't need to even scroll down.
For this i'm just going to presume your skinning a pistol. In the expanded list look for "weapons\pistol\fp\bitmaps\pistol" click it and this should open in the tag editor box.
In the tag editor box look for the "inject texture" button and click it. Then look for the skin you have downloaded (and make sure you have extracted it if it came in a .rar file) and open the .dds file. The image that you had should now of changed, as you inject the skin you might get a message saying something about it being to big, but just hit "yes" it won't effect anything.
Next hit the save texture button, close HMT and go test out your new skin.
Be sure to back up your "MAPS" folder, as if something goes wrong you want to be able to replace the map you have screwed up.

Theres a better way of doing this, its the same thing as you said but you just export the bitmap (image and mask depends on what your skinning) rename it and type in .bmp it wont always work if you just hurry up and save. use a photo editor like gimp, Photoshop or even ms paint. Modify or skin your weapon and import the image and/or mask if required. copy and replace the bitmaps.map file assuming you did as huggy said and made backups. Run halo in a LAN game to see how it worked out.
Ive had too much trouble with .dds skins so i just posted an alternative in doing it. At least its how i do it since i make my own skins.
