In defense of American football de la Wiki:
It was derived from rugby football. When it became popularized in the states some new rules were added. Eventually the "forward pass" became allowed and mass formations disallowed, which gave players more space to run the ball. The name, however, stuck despite the huge derivations from the rules and game play.

Yes, American football is a (worse, imo) derivation of an English game, just as baseball is a jazzed up derivation of rounders, a game that we play at picnics and whatnot while we drink our tea and eat our crumpets and comment on each other's hats.
