Nuclear is the wave of the future. One huge problem with it is the misconceptions that people have about it. Like numpty did mention though a problem is storage of the waste created however they have designed containers for that which can survive an impact with a train going 60mph and still maintain containment integrity. People's ignorance can often be a huge hinderance when it comes to progress and the public likes to stick with the status quo but pretty soon we are gonna run out of the black liquid we all cherish and then are gonna be in real trouble.
The thing that gets the people is not the number of accidents, but the scope and tragedy associated with it (take Fukishima or Chornobyl). Widespread nuclear radiation is definitely not anything that anyone wants in their backyard garden.
Of course, if we can harness nuclear fusion (which releases far more energy than fission and is MUCH cleaner), I would say that humanity might have it set for quite some time.
However, the paranoia associated with nuclear energy is rather detrimental to the whole field, as I believe no new power plants have been built in the US since the Three Mile Island incident. I actually live in the general vicinity of a nuclear powerplant (which, incidentally, employs the majority of the Asians and Indians in my city....), and no one ever complains about it. Instead, everyone complains about a cement plant being built.
